Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth, unfortunately, do not suddenly make you wise, so how do you know if you have them, and how do you know if you need to remove them? In some cases, you may experience symptoms such as swelling in the back of the oral cavity, limited jaw mobility, or pain when chewing. However, the majority of people with wisdom teeth don’t feel any symptoms, which is why you should be getting check-ups regularly with your dentist.
Generally, the wisdom teeth are removed in the teen years, when recovery is shorter and less painful. As you get into your 30s and 40s, recovery time is longer and you are at risk for infections and other complications. So be proactive about getting your wisdom teeth removed!
The procedure consists of getting either a local anesthetic or a general anesthetic, which would put you to sleep for the procedure. The dentist will cut open the gum, and remove any bone covering the tooth. Then, the dentist will separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone, and remove the tooth itself. Stitches may be required after the surgery. Some kinds of stitches will dissolve on their own, and some may need to be removed at a future appointment.
